Tactic #17: Get More Time

You’ve heard it said before:

“We all have the same 24 hours in a day; it’s what you do with them that counts.”

There is always time in your day, but how you choose to use it will determine whether or not you achieve your goals.

If you feel like you are continually short on time and unable to exercise, there is a serious question you need to ask yourself: How badly do you want to meet your goals? Are you willing to sacrifice something in order to meet them?

If you determine that you do have a desire to meet your goals and will do what it takes to make your daily exercise practice happen, then exercise must become a top priority.

This means it comes before entertainment, pleasure, extra sleep, or chatting with friends. You do what it takes, just like you do what it takes to make sure the oil gets changed in your car or that you brush your teeth each day.

Here are some ideas for activities you can cut down on to free up time for your exercise habit:

• Checking email

• Using social media (FB, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest)

• Reading

• Watching TV

• Internet browsing

• Going to manicure/massage/salon appointments

• Flat-ironing or curling your hair (wear it in an easier style)

• Keeping your house spic-and-span (I’m not saying let things get filthy; just don’t worry about keeping it in a perfect, clutter-free state every waking moment.)

If you take the time to really assess how you spend the minutes and hours of your day, you can, without a doubt, find ways to free up more time, even if it’s just 15 or 20 minutes a day in 5-minute increments. You’ll discover there are activities you can eliminate if you are willing to make some small sacrifices.

HOW TO IMPLEMENT

Step One:

Spend a week tracking the time you spend on all activities throughout the day. Make a spreadsheet or just write it down in a notebook, but physically track what you are doing, the time of day you are doing it, and the amount of time it takes. Be detailed and account for even the small things in your day.

Step Two:

Use the Rescue Time app to monitor what you do online. It will keep a log of all the sites you visit and how long you are there. No, you really don’t need to spend 45 minutes a day watching BuzzFeed videos or keeping tabs on what every single friend on Facebook is doing.

Step Three:

Once you have accounted for your time, start marking off the unessential tasks. By eliminating 15 minutes on Twitter, 30 minutes on Facebook, and 45 minutes watching videos, for example, you have a very nice amount of time in which you can incorporate your daily exercise habit.

With this three-step process, you might not even feel the pain of sacrifice because you aren’t cutting out essential tasks in your day. It’s just extra fluff and time-wasters that really add very little value to your life. Also, nothing says you can’t check Facebook or watch a few videos while you are on the treadmill.
